Personal Growth & Inspiration
Gratitude is not forced cheerfulness. It is the discipline of noticing what is already holding you up.
Most advice about gratitude fails because it asks you to feel something. You cannot instruct a feeling into existence, and being told to be grateful when you are exhausted mostly produces guilt. So start somewhere lower down: not with feeling, but with noticing.
The floor held. The kettle worked. Someone let you out at the junction. None of this is inspiring and none of it is meant to be. The practice is simply to register that a great deal is going right, quietly, in the background, at all times. Feeling tends to arrive later and on its own schedule.
Attention is the part you control. Feeling is the part that follows.
When you are under sustained stress, attention narrows to threat. That is not a character flaw, it is the nervous system doing its job. Deliberately widening attention to include what is stable is one of the few things that reliably interrupts the narrowing without arguing with it.
Put the 528 Hz tone on low and name three things that held today. Say them out loud. The tone gives your attention something to rest against, which makes the noticing easier.
Do this for a fortnight and something small shifts. Not happiness exactly. More like a widening of the frame, so that the difficult thing is still there but is no longer the only thing in view.
